The undergraduate curriculum requires 67 credit hours of engineering courses, which includes heat transfer, energy systems, electrical circuits, multiple machine courses, and in-depth preparation in both mechanic systems and thermo-fluids systems. These build on the 32 hours of basic math and sciences, like calculus, differential equations, chemistry, and physics.

We also want our graduates to emerge with the broad learning experiences that are expected from a college education, so you will also take 29 general education courses, including the standard freshman English courses, plus philosophy, economics, history, literature, and public speaking.

Senior Design Projects

During your final semester, you will work with a team in a semester-long design project, which should utilize many of your experiences from your previous coursework. You will work with a faculty advisor, who will be your guide and mentor for your project, but your work will be mostly autonomous.

You'll have a number of project options at the beginning of the semester, gathered from industry sponsors, national and regional research, and student interests. Past projects include a human-powered vehicle, autonomous vehicles with military applications, and alternative energy sources. Your project will have specific requirements, but you'll need to address prior or current developments, as well as the need to alter an existing product, component, or system, or to build a new one. You'll also need to address economic, environmental, ethical, and social concerns that could arise, including adhering to regulations and avoiding health and safety concerns.

By the end of the semester, you will have a completed product or goal. To showcase your project, you'll create both a midterm and final report, a poster illustrating the final results, and a final oral presentation.
